-- -- blog portfolio textfx i am playr blind fold tree flow leave a note droid flow heart blossom sidescroll about me contact making android live wallpapers with unity november 17th, 2016 i made my first live wallpaper for android five whole years ago. i was developing in native java, on a machine that wasn’t powerful enough to even run the android emulator, making blind changes and testing it out directly on my then htc desire android phone. the process was slow and cumbersome to say the least, but the idea of making a live wallpaper app and releasing to the store within just a week or two, was a very exciting prospect to me! ‘heart blossom’ being demoed by my thumb i made a bunch of wallpapers in the end, with my most successful being my very first; the valentines day inspired ‘heart blossom’, which has had over 57,000 downloads to date (the free version!). although i eventually packed away my wallpaper making tools, and moved onto other projects, the desire to create more of them, never really went away. so, fast forwarding to this autumn, during a procrastination-fuelled browse of the asset store, i stumbled across a plugin boasting the ability to use unity to create android live wallpapers! my mind instantly raced with the endless possibilities that that would afford; any beautifully crafted unity scene could be transformed into someones new favourite wallpaper background. the plugin that’s made it all possible! that plugin was ulivewallpaper . it’s not the cheapest plugin on the store, but it delivers on its promise, and is super easy to use! ok, plugin bought, money spent, it was time to make something! with christmas just a mere 3 months away, that seemed like as good a theme as any, so i started started researching the competition. a lot of competition… sweet christmas, there are a lot of christmas themed live wallpapers! of which, a hand-full seemed quite nice, but the majority were just low-quality fodder. being an experienced unity developer, i was confident that i’d be able to make something of a decent high quality, so that was going to be one of my unique selling points over most of the competition! for most of the wallpapers, the only real interaction was the ability to scroll or rotate around the scene as you moved through your home screen pages. this is ok, but i always found that i didn’t like the way the scene looked from some angles, and would have to return back to the central page to leave it in a state that looked best. i wanted my wallpaper to offer some fun interactivity, but also maintain a consistent attractive layout. subtle, stylish, playful and a bit cute; that’s what it needed to be! go on! give it a shake… what i ended up with was lil’ xmas tree . it’s a cute little cartoony christmas tree, which shakes and wobbles as you navigate from screen to screen. a nice calm wintery scene, with gentle falling snow, slowing piling up on the trees branches, only to be flung off in a cloud of dust and snow with the next cheeky shake. it’s your tree, position it where ever you like! i had the basic wobbling tree and snowy scene finished relatively quickly, and i’d originally planned on just using androids native wallpaper settings screen, and allow positioning of the tree using a drop down of presets; left, mid-left, middle, mid-right, right. scaling the tree was to be handled in the same way; small, medium, large. but after playing around with the tree size and position in the unity editor scene, and noticing how varied and wonderful the layout could be, i knew i had to offer a higher level of customisation. this meant scrapping the use of the android settings menu, and implementing my own settings menu within unity (which ulivewallpaper fully supports!), and ultimately tripling the development time on the project. but the end result is something that i’m really happy with; it’s simple and intuitive, yet very flexible and allows for the user to directly manipulate the scene to look exactly how they like. count down the days… i extended the same functionality for the editing of the countdown text, adding the ability to change the colour, set whether it’s in background or foreground mode, and even play around with the projection of its shadow. find that perfect alien-planet feel you’re looking for last on my list of settings to implement for the first release, was the ability to set the colour of the scene. aiming again to offer the user a high level of control with a very simple interface, i ended up making my own hue colour slider setting. i properly learnt for the first time in my life, exactly the relationship between hue, brightness and saturation! fascinating! i didn’t want to allow every possible rgb colour, because so many of them would look horrible, so instead i just allow the tweaking of the hue, which results in similarly toned colours and more aesthetically pleasing results. so there you have it; my joyous return to the exciting world of android live wallpaper development, i ho-ho-hope you like it… (sorry). general , unity development | no comments | trackback “am i rich yet?!” – raspberry pi sales monitor april 2nd, 2016 so, i’m a publisher of an asset on the unity asset store (see previous tweets, posts, shameless plugs, etc), which i sell for money(!) … it’s $30 a pop, and i don’t sell that many each month (we’re talking roughly 10 lately), so each sale i do make gives me a little endorphin rush. however, it’s that little rush that prompts me to then routinely check my sales page all the god damn time… now, obviously with only 10 of those page refreshes resulting in an uplifting rush, out of the 10,000,000 times i’ve refreshed it, that’s quite a lot of wasted time, energy and hope… “wait,… i own a raspberry pi! that should be doing this repetitive task for me!” so yes, i set about getting my lonely, bored raspberry pi to automatically poll my sales page, and then inform me when i’ve made a sale (preferably with a sweet ‘ca-ching!’ sound effect). step 1: getting the sales data. i originally figured that i’d have to write some nifty python script to sign-in to my publisher account page with my credentials, crawl through the page html and parse out the juicy sales figures that i desired… but fortunately serhii yolkin of lost polygon had already done the leg-work with this and hosted a wonderful php api for it on github ( here ). what a good guy!
